Complete power grid migration, ArcGIS Enterprise + UN deployment, and SAP integration

The challenge

Meet the following objectives defined by the organization:

• To modernize asset management and move forward on the digital transformation
• Improve the regulatory reporting process (CREG resolution 030)
• Optimize field operations
• Ensure minimum times in data workflows
• Integrate other corporate systems

Achieve these goals without having to survey all of Boyacá's grid again and get all the benefits of Utility Network and ArcGIS Enterprise in the process.

Background

The company still have paper-based network maintenance and expansion workflows, without ensuring proper digitization of changes to network elements in its systems as changes occurred in the field. In addition, there was an important gap between the data that rested in the corporate ERP, commercial system and systems of analysis and operation of the network, which made it very difficult to make decisions on time and with updated information.

In the search for solutions, MPSIG and ESRI worked together with EBSA in the process of understanding the advantages and opportunities of deploying ArcGIS Enterprise with Utility Network, and in defining the best strategy to migrate and update their data and implement the necessary workflows to solve existing challenges.

Since EBSA is the main electric power distribution utility in Boyacá, the assets of the network and their geographical location are the main information to be managed and used by all areas of the company according to their function. The common denominator for all is the electrical asset, its spatial location and its interconnection with the rest of the elements of the network. This is why ArcGIS Utility Network and ESRI technology play a critical role in achieving shared, unified knowledge of this information across the organization.

The solution

• 100% of EBSA's previously existing network elements in the SPARD system were migrated to Utility Network
• The data model for EBSA was defined by adjusting the model defined by ESRI for Utility Networks in the electric sector
• Network editing and maintenance data workflows have been implemented in ArcGIS Pro, in order to perform network maintenance and network expansion tasks, including validations that secure business rules
• Solution for managing work orders in the field and updating assets with mobile devices, using ArcGIS Workforce, FieldMaps and Survey 123, with the ability to directly edit network elements in the Utility Network from the field
• Deployment of ArcSAPi software for ArcGIS Enterprise integration (including the module for ArcGIS Workforce) with SAP-PM

The results

EBSA now benefits of their ArcGIS Enterprise and Utility Network, with which it is achieving:

• Short and predictable times in workflows and data gathered in field operations, from the moment of registration in the field, to quality control and approval for inclusion in the official and curated map and of the network
• A unified source of truth for fundamental data of company network assets
• Integration with the company's main business management systems. In the first phase with SAP and later with the commercial system and ADMS
• Ability to respond with confidence and security to the information requirements of internal and external audits, requests from users and regulatory entities with acceptable and predictable times
• Improvement of the operational efficiency of the organization
• Very important advances in the digital transformation goals
